Kissing Jace gave me a late night urge for Skittles – sugary goodness in rainbow form – but I wasn’t sure where I would find candy at 10:00 on the show grounds. Determined, I pulled on my yoga pants and left my trailer on a sugar hunt. The vending machine by the show office was my only hope.

The parking lot was deserted as I walked towards the barn using both hands to finger-brush my hair into a high bun. Wrapping the elastic tie around my curls, my mind drifted back to Jace...and his kiss. His emerald eyes. His tight grip around my shoulders. His chest pressed against me.

The visions made me sigh.

There was something about him that forced my stomach to flutter, over and over again. I couldn’t make it stop. And, after that kiss, I knew Jace felt the same way about me. He knew he had made a mistake and now he wanted me back. But this time our relationship was going to be different. This time I was going to be in control of the situation. I needed to set boundaries, rules. Tomorrow I would sit Jace down, looking especially cute in my breeches, and tell him we could only be together if he was exclusive - my boyfriend. I deserved that. I deserved to know exactly what he was thinking.

I sashayed into the barn, thoroughly impressed with my plan, and headed for Star’s stall. She deserved a snack too - a few carrots and some love, especially after today’s events.

The aisles were dark, lights off and horses sleeping, so I was surprised to see the lights blazing over Linda’s section of the barn. Maybe Tim was checking the horses before bed? But as I approached the stalls, I caught the sound of Lucy’s voice and I slowed my stride. Did I really want to deal with her after such a perfect evening? I wasn’t in the mood for a buzz-kill.

But before I could turn around, Lucy hurdled herself out of Georgie’s stall, kicking a cloud of cedar shavings into the aisle as she ran straight towards me. I froze.

What in the heck? What was she doing? Did she hear me coming and go completely insane with rage? Was she planning on beating me senseless while no one was around? I weighed my options. Lucy was tall and wiry and definitely faster than me. I couldn’t outrun her so I tightened my fists into balls, ready to take a whack at crazy-train. As she got closer I braced myself for a Lucy-style football tackle. Maybe if I tripped her...

“Taylor,” she shouted, like she was happy to see me.

“What?” I barked back, realizing my balled fists were now positioned in front of my chest, ready to fight. Not that I’d ever been in a fight in my life.

She skidded to a stop in front of me, nearly wiping out as her cowboy boots slid across the concrete. But instead of slapping, pushing or kicking me, she grabbed hold of my wrist and pulled, hard, taking me with her.
